New 2010 golf pitching wedge groove rule

Golf tips by Donald K.. Burleson

February 2010

The 2010 golf wedge groove changes are somewhat confusing.

Much ado has been given to the new 2010 USGA/R&A groove rule which is designed to make pitching wedge shots run farther and with less loft:

This new groove rule will impact all new 2010 pitching wedges and has been incorporated into the new 2010 Callaway X series “Jaws” wedges.  These new grooves are called "Spin Milled C-C grooves", and you will see a CC stamped into the hozel.

However, if you prefer the feel of traditional wedges, you can buy a wedge groove cutter to square-off your wedge grooves.

For mid to high handicappers, you want the maximum loft and backspin from your wedges, something that you will not see in 2010 pitching wedges conforming to the new 2010 golf groove rule:

I'm going to buy a pitching wedge groove cutter groove cutter on Amazon, a way to square-off my grooves for higher, cleaner pitches with more backspin:

NOTE: Squaring-off your pitching wedge grooves is not legal, and does not conform to the new 2010 USGA wedge groove rules.
