Dating a
Winchester Model 1890 - .22 Short rifle

The Winchester Model 1890 is a great investment gun because they are inexpensive and still shoot-able!  I got mine for under $700 and it still shoots great even thought she is over 100 years old.

The Winchester Model 1890 also has the classic 1800's style, and it looks good hanging on your wall:

Depending on the serial number and "make" (either "Model 1890" or "Model 90"), these guns can goes for several thousand dollars, depending on age, rarity and condition.

You can buy this classic 22 caliber short rifle one all day long at gunbroker.com, which will usually have several dozen Winchester Model 1980 rifles for sale.

  • Weight is 5 lbs. 13 oz.
  • Set serial numbers and year of manufacture are at proofhouse.com .
  • The 1910 Winchester Model 1891 22 short rifles sell in the realm of about $800-$1,400 in 2010, depending on condition.
  • They stopped making the Model 1890 in 1941.  George Watrous, a Winchester employee, counted total production at 764,215 rifles.

 

Mine is serial number 413,xxx, which was made in 1910. There were 30,140 Winchester 1890 rifles made in 1910.

After 1901, when the third model came out, all receivers were blued.  Hence, this one is pre 1901:
