223 rifle competition notes

Pistol tips by Donald K. Burleson

December 2010

  • Recommended starter 223 rifle is the Remington 700 LTR in 223 caliber.
  • Jewel trigger company offers triggers are great for match shooting.
  • All else being equal, a longer barrel produces a higher velocity.
  • Rifles chambers wear out:  The barrel is sawed off on the chamber end, and a new chamber is drilled, resulting in a shorter barrel length.
  • Barrels are broken-in by the process of "fire lapping", shooting bullets impregnated with very fine abrasives.

  • Matches are shot at 200, 300 and 600 yards, iron sights and telescopic sights.
  • Leupold sights are worth the investment.
  • Get Protector sandbags or American-Bison-Rifle-Rests.
  •  Buy some "round count" books for all new rifles.
  • Nationals are at Camp Perry.
  • Compass Lake Engineering makes on of the best AR-15's.
  • See the "goodies" sections of the US rifle teams web site.
  • PC practice system:  RIKA = about $1,100
  • Get an 8.5-25 Leupold scope = about $1,100
